What Lines Beneath

2021-2022, published 2023

The story behind the project:

“The project stemmed from my love and passion for sports. As a kid I always looked forward to gym class and regularly practiced at home. I’ve played soccer all my life and still practice indoor soccer on weekends with friends.

Over the course of those weekends, I noticed and appreciated different elements of the sporting hall from a photography perspective. One soccer weekend, I took my camera with me and snapped a few pictures of the floor in the sporting hall. The colours, shapes and textures seemed mondrianesque to me in nature.

It’s funny that something as mundane and overlooked as a sporting hall can hold things of interest if you look at it in a different manner, and in doing so, beauty can be found anywhere around you.

To explore this beauty, I photographed roughly fifty sporting halls throughout 2021 and 2022. Each hall visit I treated as a game, not a soccer game, but I needed to score a goal nonetheless. The goal for every location was to have captured at least one interesting observation in the hour slot I had.

I believe limitation breeds creativity, and the short time slots pushed me to see what I couldn’t see before.”
